I put this BLW Mealtime Essential Kit together because my son is starting solids soon, and I know firsthand how overwhelming it can be for first-time parents wondering, “What do I need to start solids?”

I want to help parents answer the big question: What utensils and plates do I actually need for BLW? Ideally, the fork and spoon can be introduced as early as 6 months, but in the beginning, babies mostly use their hands to explore and play (yes, play—not eat, haha!) with their food. That’s why plates that aren’t too deep make self-feeding easier.

For drinks, I’d start with an open cup from Ezpz, then transition to a straw cup—which just so happens to be our multifunctional snack cup!

A little about me and my kids—I introduced my firstborn (now 5) to solids using BLW, and honestly, I was completely unprepared for the mess, anxiety, and uncertainty that came with it. I even took courses to learn the difference between gagging and choking because, like many parents, that was one of my biggest fears.

Coming from a traditional family where porridge was the go-to first food, BLW was a whole new concept for both me and my loved ones. But after diving deep into research, I chose BLW because I truly believed in its benefits.

And let’s be real—BLW is MESSY. But it’s worth it. I still remember listening to a podcast by Katie Ferraro where she said, “If you think BLW is time-consuming, think about the time you need to feed your baby, coax your toddler to eat, run after your toddler, and fight your toddler during mealtimes. Now, that’s time-consuming.” That completely shifted my perspective, and I went all in.

Now, I wouldn’t say my daughter is the perfect eater who finishes every meal without fuss. But she’s open to trying new foods (we hit 100 before she turned 1!), understands her hunger cues, and I rarely have to battle her at the table. She’s even gone to bed hungry before because she didn’t eat enough dinner—oops! But I trust her to listen to her body, and mealtimes in our home are relaxed, full of laughter, and free from stress. That’s exactly the kind of experience I hope this set helps create for other parents too.
